Used Rover StreetwiseUnfortunately the Rover Streetwise had a very limited lifetime. The car was launched in 2003 and Rover went to the dogs in 2005, so finding one as a second hand car might not be as easy as you might wish - finding a rover 75 for sale might be an easier option - but if you do find one then it is in many ways the perfect little car for the job it is designed to do, and it has a lot of style.
Maybe the Streetwise is not to everyone’s taste, and perhaps its rugged styling is just a little pretentious; nevertheless it is eye catching and reasonably economical. Based on the Rover 25 but with a raised suspension and big bumpers, the car has pretentions of being an off-roader though it is a little let down by being only a two wheel drive.
There are a number of engine options starting with a 1.4 litre petrol unit. This is a little underpowered for urban motoring though fine if the car is to be used mainly in-town. Next up is a 1.6 petrol unit followed by a 1.8 litre, which are more adequate for motorway driving. Probably the best option is the 2.0 diesel unit which has great torque and is also very economical. If you do intend to use the streetwise off-road, it is the only real option.
The car is fun to drive with easy handling. It has plenty of grip and you can corner fairly aggressively, confident that it will continue to go in the direction in which it is pointed. There is not much room for rear seated passengers despite the option to have three rear seats. There is a reasonable amount of boot space for a car of this size.
A possible problem for this car is that it was not around long enough to receive a Euro NCAP crash test rating, though the Rover 25 on which it is based received three stars, and there is no reason to suppose that the Streetwise is any worse. For a reasonably economic car that is a little different, the Rover Streetwise is worth considering.
