Checklist for Used Car Buying

Nowadays buying used cars makes good sense, both financially and practically. There are many varieties of cars that people want to try. Another objective of getting a new model is to get rid of the old one.. Similarly a person who has just bought a new car might have landed in a financial mess and will prefer to get rid of his debts by selling his car. Whatever be the reason buying used cars ultimately benefits the buyers.
A used car can be considered as a new one if it is just one or two years old. Such cars are available at discounts of 20-40% from the current market price. So you will not only get a new car, but also be saved financially

This is not to say that a car older by 2 years or more is worse... If you check it and if you take used car advice from an expert then buying an old car can be even more beneficial.

However you must remember that if you buy used cars there are certain limitations.. Your financial charges will be higher than they would have been if you'd gone for a new model and of course you will not get to play around with the latest car gadgets. However that is okay considering that you are saving lot of money.

Used Car Buying Tips

Buying used cars may be beneficial but it does have its own risks (in addition to rewards). You must know that the car may have been involved in a small mishap. Similarly it must have gone to the garage several times. Here are some tips that will help yo u in buying used cars:
  • Search for used cars data for the models you are interested in. Find about their gas consumption, mileage, maintenance costs and more importantly cost of spare parts. Now narrow down your choice to one or two models.
  • Always look for a good car that is available in a decent condition. Never go for cheap bargains, unless you are buying your car from your close associate or a known and trustworthy person. Cheap cars are priced lowly as they are substandard..
  • Check out the car's history record. If it's been to the garage or back to the showroom too often, you must not prefer it.
  • Test drive 2-4 used cars of the same model and figure out which one is the best.
  • Never believe what you are told unless you are following an independent expert's advice.
  • Never believe any verbal promises.
  • Thoroughly check the car's registration, insurance papers and financial papers if any. Make sure there is no lien.
  • The person who is selling the ca r must be the owner of the car as validated by the registration and car ownership documents.
  • If you are buying from a dealer, then read the fine print carefully and make sure you have understood the warranties that come with the car.
  • Before you buy the car, get insurance quotes.
  • Always bargain. Nothing is fixed in life and the same goes for car prices. You may be successful in knocking off 10-20% off the sale price.
  • Do not buy a car with a high mileage. If a SUV's been driven for over 150,000 miles, do not be carried away by its rugged and handsome look.
  • Check the condition of the car both interior and exterior and also see if all the gadgets and air-conditioning are working fine.
  • Get an expert to inspect the car for you.

Used Car For Sale: Sample Negotiations

Understand that while talking to a car salesman or a seller you have to control emotions.
There should not be any wows, or oohs. Similiarly you should not show disappointment or anger in any form. Just play it deadpan and factual. Here are some examples of conversation you are likely to encounter

If the seller asks the buyer to see the car and then talk about the price then the buyer should continue talking and try to make the seller quote a price. This way the buyer can figure out if the seller is determined about the price or not.

If the seller says that the price is not negotiable or is slightly negotiableThe buyer should tell him that he is a serious buyer and does not want to waste the seller's time as well as his time. Then the buyer should stress that he is interested in a lower price and this will give an idea of how negotiable the seller is.

If the buyer feels that the car is right for him, but the price is way too high, then he should leave his contact number with the seller requesting him to contact the buyer in case the seller reduces his price.
